Below is my interview with Peter Kalmus, the latest in a series of interviews I am doing with climate activists. Last time I shared an interview with a woman poisoned by the US military's leak of jet fuel in Hawaii. Premium subscribers are seeing this today, and it will go out to everyone who subscribes tomorrow.
Today I am sharing my interview with a man I most admire: climate activist and NASA data scientist Peter Kalmus. Kalmus is the author of Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution, and is the founder of the website noflyclimatesci.org which encourages academics and climate scientists to fly less or not at all in order to decrease their carbon emissions. Kalmus also is co-founder of the app Earth Hero: Climate Change. This app gives users steps to engage in climate actions and to reduce their emissions. Peter has the unusual talent of being able to integrate science, theory, and action and he does it from the heart as well as the head. He never descends into cynicism and is always optimistic. He recently was arrested after chaining himself to the door of a Chase bank to protest the financing of fossil fuel projects.
In this wide ranging interview, Peter and I discuss the ongoing heat wave that’s been gripping the planet, the insane disconnect between climate policy and reality, the US government’s apparent inability to address climate change as we approach the tipping point, and other pressing issues.
Enjoy!
We must acknowledge that animal agriculture is the biggest driver of deforestation worldwide. 90% of the Amazon rainforest is destroyed to graze cattle or grow livestock feed for worldwide markets. We can all make a huge difference regarding climate change by the foods we choose to eat, and be more kind to animals and our own bodies at the same time. It's a win win win.
